As a slave ship captain, he transported thousands of Africans to slavery in America. Following a powerful conversion experience during a storm at sea, God turned his life around. Newton would eventually become a pastor in the Church of England who fought to abolish the slave trade, and went on to write several of the church’s most beloved hymns, including “Amazing Grace.
